Final Blog Post

I suppose this will be the final time I post on this blog. Its interesting, the entire semester as been completely through out on its head, yet expectations must be met. I had a good time this semester with this class, and I believe that I know more about blogging now than I did ever before.

Music has always been a passion of mine, and I wanted to spread what I know in the limited way I can. I’ve never blogged about anything before, so this class presented a unique opportunity. I’ll admit my knowledge about music is limited in a variety of ways. However, it doesn’t limit my ability to say whatever I want on the internet, which is freeing in a way. I never really understood blogs for what they are and what they can be used to do.

Before this class I assumed most blogs were for bored teenagers who wanted to express themselves online. It still is, but now I understand how much variety really exists with this platform. Amatuers and professionals can bump into each other and critique each other’s work. Sometimes its productive, other times it can be discouraging. Everyone wants to be known, and have some sort of impact, even if its small.

When I started I wanted to know how to get the word out. Expressing myself has never been an issue, but I’ve always had trouble gaining traction online. This is both a personal and professional issue. In the future, I’m still going to need to know how to spread my client’s work online. At this point, I believe I know more than what I did at the start. However, I am rapidly realizing there is no way for me to control the internet.

I understand how advertising works and how certain audiences reach certain content. But manipulating those channels to increase your own visibility is difficult, impossible for some. I can fully understand how this can become a full time job. There are technical aspects that I still don’t understand but struggle to do so. I underappreciated the amount of leg work and people go into creating online ecosystems. This is important to understand, as I will most likely be working in one of those systems in a few years.

Now I want to know how to effectively buy advertising and understand unconscious motivations in people. While I dislike fake news and misinformation, it has a habit of getting around. I want to understand how quickly that sort of information spreads and how it could be applied to my own work.

Its strange taking all of my final classes online. I mean everyone is now, but originally I still had a few classes on campus. Overall I’m okay with it, I still see a lot of my friends around campus. But isolation is strange, and its making me think about a lot of things differently. I really hope I didn’t waste time… hopefully the future looks bright.
